Puppetry Pastimes Daniel Oates Dunstan Dragon marionette

Dunstan the Dragon

The egg from which Dunstan hatched had rolled down the side of a
mountain and was found by Princess Destiny. The Princess used the
unusual egg as the centerpiece for the mantle above the fire. Though, at
first, very surprised at what emerged from the egg, she took care of the
dragon. She fed him holly leaves and scones, taught him how to walk
and, eventually, how to talk and not to bite and good table manners and
how to play badminton and all the other games that she knew. His Flying
skills were self taught though, so he's not too good at that. Dunstan has
grown up as everyone's friend; kind gentle and fun-loving and only ever
breathes fire when he sneezes. He does not realize that most dragons
are not like him.

He, like Sir Dorric, is totally devoted to the Princess and has the
characteristics of a loving pet dog. His attitude is always positive even in
the most adverse conditions. He's not terribly bright though, and quite
often does not fully comprehend what is going on but will, nevertheless,
happily play along. In fact, he sees some kind of game in most of the
activities his companions are involved in.
Puppetry Pastimes Daniel Oates Darwin Wizard marionette

Darwin the Wizard

Darwin practices magic with a passion and is well respected far and wide
for his talents as a Wizard. He uses his magic to help the town's people
when seemingly unsolvable problems arise. So the people of the town
feel very secure knowing that Darwin will always save the day.
Throughout his life he has embarked on long spell collecting expeditions,
gathering spells and potions from the corners of the Kingdom and has
made careful note of them in a big black book.

But now Darwin has lost the book containing his life's work. His quest to
find this book of spells is hindered by his companions and his failing
memory, which he must rely on, when casting spells of magic. The
results are often surprising as he frequently gets them wrong.

Puppetry Pastimes Daniel Oates Dexter Jester marionette

Dexter the Jester

Dexter is the castle Jester. But he has never really been very good at it.
His jokes aren't funny, his tricks and pranks always fail and his juggling
is appalling. Most of the time he ends up just annoying everyone except
the King, who thinks his failures are rather amusing. Dexter feels greatly
unappreciated and he vents his contempt for all those who boo his
performances to his sidekick, the Raven. He secretly plans how he would
get back at them for all the humiliation he has had to endure. But he is
powerless until he comes into possession of Darwin's magic book.
Realizing it's potential for wonderful jester tricks and pranks he fulfills his
long awaited dream of revenge.

Puppetry Pastimes Daniel Oates Princess Destiny marionette puppet

Princess Destiny

Princess Destiny is a bossy chatterbox, completely spoiled by her father,
the King. He gives her everything a princess could possibly want but she
disappoints him with her lack of appreciation. Like a typical young
princess she is easily bored with castle life. She calls upon her pet
dragon, Dunstan and her obedient bodyguard, Sir Dorric for amusement.
They join in with her pranks and games though they know she will likely
change the rules to suit her at anytime. Destiny's endless pursuit of fun
gets her and her companions into trouble. It takes an adventure that
drags her through a series of many humiliating situations to make her
appreciate the things and people around her.
Puppetry Pastimes Daniel Oates Delilah Unicorn marionette puppet

Delilah the Unicorn

Delilah the Unicorn is a very shy and cautious creature. Her magical horn
is highly prized so she would rather avoid most people, but she
frequently leaves the forest to come to the aid of those in great need of
her magical powers. Her extraordinary sense of intuition has
many-a-time saved the day. Although she is soft-spoken and remains
mostly silent, she is in fact the smartest character of them all and can
speak almost any language. She's a listener and listens to all the things
in nature around her. So when she puts forward an idea or even has a
strong premonition it is best to heed her advice. The others rarely do
though. Only in hind sight do they realize the wisdom of her advice.
Puppetry Pastimes Daniel Oates Dorric Knight marionette puppet

Sir Dorric the Knight

Sir Dorric is, without doubt, the most fearless and chivalrous Knight in
the Kingdom and so, naturally, he was appointed the personal bodyguard
to Princess Destiny. His loyalty to her is absolute, his obedience
unlimited and her every wish his command. The only problem is, he is
rather clumsy. Maybe it's his cumbersome armor, maybe it's his
impeccably bad timing or maybe it's just plain bad luck, but no matter
the errand, venture or quest, something along the way usually goes
horribly wrong and he has to rely on his friends to rescue him.

Santa's Little-known Helpers
(excerpts)
Dunstan the Dragon is a plastic marionette from Bozart
Toys, a company that hires artists to design its
products. Dunstan's creator is Daniel Oates, whose
sculptures were described by the New York Times as
"possessing the purity and beauty of religious art".
Karen Searvie, owner of the Wooden Horse in San
Jose, Ca., has simpler words for Dunstan: "He's a very
handsome dragon - with wings."
